The Art of Subtle Control

Miniature painting isn't just about staying inside the lines. It's about managing Hue, Value, and Material to sculpt the 3D form.

The Four Pillars of Paint

1. Basecoat

The Truth

Local color + Value anchor. This sets the "truth" of the material before light hits it.

2. Shadow

The Sculptor

Value + Hue Shift. Shadows define the volume. They are rarely just "darker base"—they are cooler or warmer.

3. Highlight

The Definer

Value + Temperature. Where you define edges, planes, and material reflectivity (matte vs gloss).

4. Material

The Finish

Surface Physics. Controlling Gloss, Matte, and Metallic properties to define what an object is made of.

3-Week Learning Path

Complete these slides to understand the workflow.

Week 1: One Model, Three Values

Pick one miniature with clear forms (like a Space Marine or Fantasy Hero).

  • Paint only in 3 steps: Shadow / Mid / Highlight.
  • No fancy blends. Just place the masses cleanly.
  • Goal: Make the model readable from 3 feet away. Every shape needs a shadow mass and a highlight mass.

Week 2: Add Hue Shifts

Now we break the "monochrome" habit. Shadows are not just black.

  • Shadows: Shift cool (blue/purple) or warm (red/brown) on purpose.
  • Highlights: Shift the opposite direction slightly.
  • Goal: Style Control. Value builds form, but Hue builds style.
🎨

Week 3: Material Definition

Color is only half the story. Use Materials to break up the form and define physics.

  • Material Contrast: Place a Matte material (cloth/skin) next to a Gloss/Metallic one. This separates parts visually.
  • Light Response: Observe how specular highlights tighten on gloss and diffuse on matte.
  • Style: Use "Heavy Gloss" for candy/wet looks, or "Flat/Chalky" for an illustrative 2D vibe.

The Rule Set: Style through Hue

Controlling Shadows

Push Hue Toward Cool Creates a clean, cinematic, or sci-fi look.
Push Hue Toward Warm Creates a gritty, earthy, or natural look.
Push Hue Toward Purple Creates rich, high-fantasy depth.

Controlling Highlights

X
Avoid Pure White Only use pure white for the tiniest specular point.
Use Off-Whites Ivory, Pale Flesh, or Pale Blue depending on mood.
Fixing Chalkiness Stop adding white. Add a light warm/cool color instead.
